There are many summer enrichment programs offered on college campuses throughout the country, and now is the time to begin researching and enrolling your student. Many campuses have begun sending us information, and we will make that available through school-wide email and have the information packets in the college center across from the main office. We will also have the information stored on Clark's website, and inform you when that is set up. Steph Bradford, Clark biology teacher, will also keep a bulletin board set up in her room with all of the information. Many of the programs also offer scholarships. Health Careers Exploration Program (HCARE) is a five-week summer program for 20 high school juniors and seniors from the Cincinnati area who are interested in health-related careers. HCARE provides an introduction to health careers with an emphasis on development of critical thinking and problem solving skills through enrichment in chemistry, biology and math. Students are provided exposure to a wide variety of health-related careers through tours, speakers, shadowing, and academic enrichment in this program that meets Mondays through Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. from mid-June through mid-July at the College of Medicine. The priority application deadline is February 15, 2010. Priority will be given to students who are from an economically, socially, and educationally or geographically disadvantaged background that might impede academic advancement. The program dates are June 14 - July 16, 2010.
The Howard Hughes Excellence in Science Education and Learning Program (ExSEL) is a five-week summer, basic science enrichment program for 20 gifted and talented high school seniors from the Cincinnati area. It is designed for exceptionally able high school science students who must have a minimum GPA of 3.4, SAT scores (reading, math & writing) of 1750 or above, and/or ACT Composite Score of 28 or above. The students spend 7 hours per day, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in structured classroom and laboratory settings with instruction and hands-on research activities directed by established researchers and their graduate student teaching assistants. The ExSEL program is divided into five one-week problem solving modules, focusing one week each on molecular genetics, cell biology, neuroscience, immunology and structural biology. Students are required to attend all five modules. Funding is provided by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The priority application deadline is February 15, 2010. The program dates are June 14 - July 16, 2010.
PSAT results have been mailed to all sophomores and juniors along with information about the free online test prep through Peterson's. Teachers have started reviewing the test with students in their classes. We also have each student's original test booklet which will be returned after the teachers complete their review. Juniors will have PSAT review homework over winter break in preparation for the January 23 SAT.
My College Quick Start. Students also have access to My College Quick Start, a college and career planning resource through CollegeBoard at www.collegeboard.com/quickstart. Each student has an access code for My College Quick Start which is listed on the report that was mailed home. The student can view his/her score report, and for any incorrect answer there is a good explanation of the correct answer. The student will need to set up a College Board website account and use the access code printed on the PSAT/NMSQT paper score report that was mailed home.
